i was wrong...

you could say a little mama guilt...but that is nothing new! so I really was convinced that Maddie no longer needed glasses...that she was somehow cured of not so good vision...all because when Max had his 5 year old wellness check the ped said that Max will probably need to see the eye doctor in about a year or so...then Chad asked something about his brain growing and relieving some kind of pressure on the optic nerve and possibly Max would not need glasses...so then it hit me Maddie's brain was growing and since she was the master of her pincher grip and seems to find every speck of dirt or crumb on the floor that she no longer needed her glasses...so instead of fighting with her on wearing her glasses...I told myself over and over again that she was just telling me she no longer needed them...that she knew her body and she had been fixed! well not so much...her eyes are worse...one eye could be possibly be turning in...and she has to wear her glasses ALL THE TIME!! NOOOOOOO...last year I did not want the glasses because I just could not handle one more accessories -one more to do...this year it is out of pure selfishness...the hassle of keeping them on her precious face...so I got 2 pair of glasses so she has a choice of which one she wants to wear...and I am making a promise that I will somehow make her wear them...anything not to have surgery...and she does look cute in them...and yes I am trying to talk myself out of the real reason I am not a fan of the glasses...they draw attention to Maddie...when she does not have her glasses on...I get less questions about Maddie...I am not ashamed of her...I just get sick of questions, stares, and sighs...that is all...for a mom that is looking to be "normal" there is no need to draw attention to us...I really think the glasses screams Down Syndrome...yes I know this horrible...yes I know I should be over it...but again the just one more thing...adds up...

  1. For what it's worth, I think her glasses are adorable! And trust me, an adorable little girl in adorable glasses is *still* adorable. :-) And an adorable little girl in adorable glasses that can *see* is even better. Hang in there!! ((hugs))

  2. I don't think it's wrong of you to not want one more thing to draw attention to you and Maddie...I'm very much a fan of just wanting to blend in and be "normal". I don't want or need the extra attention and questions!

Good luck keeping them on her, I can't even imagine...hell I can't even get Sutter to wear shoes! I'm sure after a couple of weeks of wearing them she'll get use to it and the battle will be over! Happy Weekend!

  3. I totaly get what you mean...Even though its "just glasses" it is one more thing on the list! And I couldnt imagine trying to get Russell to keep glasses on!! My daughter had to wear glasses for a few years and we just had her eyes rechecked and she no longer needs them...So ya, at a young age the eyes can correct themselves.
And I hear ya on the attention thing. I do NOT like constantly being stared at or talked to when I go out with Russell. I know people are just trying to be nice, but usually I just like to go out get my stuff done without all the stares or comments or fuss.

  4. I remember when I found out that my Wesley had to wear glasses, I was devastated that it would be just one more thing that would make him stand out. Now, I love them. I think they are the cutest things and they make him look like a little man. We get compliments on them wherever we go. I'm sure Maddie will look just darling in her new glasses!

  5. I know it is tough. At about a year, Kristen not only needed glasses but also braces for her feet and hearing aids. It was accessory overload and, yes, many things to bring attention to us. I still sometimes tire of the questions I get but now actually love the way Kristen looks in her glasses. They will grow on you...and it will become your own normal. Your perfect normal...I promise. :)

  6. Cy our 3 year old eyes started turning in last year in September - he is very long sighted but there was no sign of it before then. They said the turning in is the brain telling the eye to focus because the image is blurred but the eye muscles take it too far - the problem with this is that the brain then switches off the picture from that eye and after a while the brain switches and doesn't learn to see from that eye which is why were told it wsa important for Cy to wear his glasses all the time so his brain continued to accept images from both eyes. And even though it was Cy an not Owen who needed these extras it seemed so much extra stress/extra to take on at the time, so I hear you on this one.

  7. I hear ya, sometimes you just wanna go about your errands without getting any unwanted attention. If Emily needs glasses one day I don't know how I will keep them on her...we are working on hats now so that her bald little noggin doesn't turn into a tomato this summer :-)

  8. I totally get it - not wanting to draw more attention. Questions can be so hard to handle. So sorry that her eyes didn't improve, but I do think glasses are absolutely adorable :)

  9. I so understand not wanting that 'one more thing'! The is no way I could keep glasses on Claire. We can hardly get socks and shoes to work...But I think Maddie's glasses are adorable!
