Potty training...I am not sure Maddie is interested or even feels the sensation yet to go to the potty...she has peed in the potty one time...that is it...after 9 months of actively trying to potty train...she has no desire...she has peed on the floor and even pooped on the floor in this process...I suppose there is some small progress -she has begun to run to the bathroom pulling up her shirt and standing over the potty like her brother...she likes to sit on the potty when I put her on it...she enjoys doing the sign for potty or pulling the potty pecs sign...but she is not interested in filling the toilet...
Here is Maddie sitting on the potty talking on her cell phone and enjoying the alone time! I should be frustrated...but I am not...I should be trying harder...but I am not...Maddie will be 4 in a few weeks...and over the summer I think I will try more...I just have this feeling that Maddie will do it when she is ready...like everything else in her life...we are on Maddie time!

Man, potty training in general for me has always been a challenge! Sophie, my 4 year old was and still is a challenge when it comes to listening to her body. Stella shows no interest whatsoever in the potty. She will be 3 in September and honestly I have absolutely no interest at all to even attempt to begin potty training her yet. The only suggestion I have is to keep it positive and try not to make it a big deal. Like you said she will do it when she is ready. Sorry, I know that wasn't much help.
ReplyDeleteI have to tell you that my older two were not potty trained until after 4 and my oldest was not #2 trained until almost 5. Bridgie 3 (with Ds) has shown the most interest of any of my kids. While by no means trained, she knows when she goes and we just put her on the potty first thing in the morning, a couple times during the day, and right before bath. At first nothing came but now nine times out of ten she goes and we celebrate by flushing and 'washing our hands' ie throwing water on the floor regardless of output. She has been pooping on the potty for 4 months. Because unfortunately it is extremely evident when she needs to go because of chronic constipation. Sitting on the potty seems to help her as we the parents still struggle to find the right foods, aides, et al. to regulate her. By no means to I have any delusions that she will be trained any time soon. And while my olders was slow to start once the started going there were no accidents. I am thinking that while B is quick to start there will be many accidents and overnite help needed for some time as she sometimes still soaks thru 2 diapers at nite. All this to say I HEAR YOU and stay calm.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any great advice other than I think what you're doing is right. Keep trying, and Maddie will learn it when she is ready...You can't really force these things.

We are going through the same thing. Lucas can hold and release fairly well but won't tell me when he needs to go so he doesn't stay dry. We are having no progress on number two ;) I have heard from other parents that our kids have a hard time with sensation and that's why it's so hard for them. I am going to buckle down this summer too. It will be warm so no pants! Hopefully we can make some progress!
ReplyDeleteOh patience patience and more patience! That is my best advice. Break down all the steps and start simple...I felt like potty training was a two year work in progress. But, I promise, you will get there. :)
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly! I rarely post, but I did blog about potty training recently. I said it would happen in Katie's time. We have been potty training for almost 2 years. Mine will just hold it for hours now. She just turned 5 and I thought for sure she would habe been trained by now. Continue to be patient. We will use rewards for pottying that are only used during potty time, sometimes that works but not consistently enough at this point. Hang in there. She will do it when she is ready.
ReplyDeleteOwey is "trained" for 1's can hold it for hours but very very rare to actually tell me he needs to go, so we take him on a schedule when he wakes, at morning tea, before a nap, etc etc, with 2's he will tell me he needs to go, usually once a day. I started with 2's because you get some warning that's it's going to happen (Owey also started signing poo when he felt the urge) after we had some success there, I moved onto wees, I did use stickers as incentive and it worked well. Also Owey used to call farts poo's similar sensation? I wonder if hats what Madds is

ReplyDeleteI set the day aside exclusively for potty training and did it in the kitchen. I gave them LOTS of liquids - chocolate milk, pop, shakes, you name it. I put them on a pottty, used a doll with a hole in her bum and loaded the dolly up too. I would praise the dolly when the dolly would go pee. I never let the child out of my sight. In a few hours, they had to pee quite often. After a while they did get it. The quickest one had it in 5 hours and was well on her way. I usually did it when they were 24 months. Every child is different and it is an aggravating time!
ReplyDeleteGah! I hate this whole potty training thing! Claire knows what the potty is for, will sometimes tell us she needs to go, but more often will ask for her diaper, which totally tells me should be trained! It's just hard to do while working. Good luck to both of us!
