lips off...please

kissable, huggable, lovable, squeezable, and I am sure whole lot of other “ables” I could describe Maddie…however, that is because she is mine…but total strangers coming up and KISSING her…yeah you read it right…KISSING her on the head, forehead and hands…on three different occasions (within a week) three different women laid lips on my Maddie…the first time I just thought AWKWARD and complained to Chad…not knowing what to do…the second time a “what the heck” smile….and the third just a shake my head and RUN!! I get Maddie is cute and that she is now lending her smile to most everyone she sees…but to kiss her is just not right…right? I do not remember ever having anyone touch Max or let alone kiss him…last night when it happen I was wearing my “Got Trisomy” t-shirt and thought to myself  do people think she needs this doting…do they even know she was born with Down Syndrome…because let me tell you Maddie knows she is cute and sweet…just ask her and she will lay it on thick with smiles…so why is it that people touch her…when she was a baby I would hide her in my sling so no one could touch or see her…and as she has gotten older I like to leave her at home so I do not have to deal with heavy petters…but with her insist-ency of being my shadow she goes most places with me on a regular basis…so either I need to learn how to say back off…or Maddie needs to get a “do not touch” sign!

  1. If someone did that to Lily, I would say "thank you for realizing my child is adorable"...and then SLAP 'EM!!!

SOOOOOO WRONG!!! And really kinda creepy!

  2. That sure IS creepy! Weird. I don't think we've had too many of those incidents, but I may have put them off with my imposing height... :-) Sammi's starting to get a little better about not running up to everyone and hugging them, but I think when people feel they've got the go-ahead from the kid, it's okay. Yuck.

  3. Oh my...that is completely awkward and slightly disturbing people do that! Yes, I think a "do not touch" sign is a great idea! It not quite, but almost as weird, as when strangers would touch my belly when I was pregnant. But kissing...now that is totally wrong!

  4. Okay, so I would love to plant a big ole kiss on those cute cheeks...but I would refrain myself because I hate it when people I don't know touch and fondle my kids! I'm really not sure what goes through peoples heads that makes them think it's 'ok' to touch and heaven forbid kiss kids they don't know! Hello I'm trying to teach my kids NOT to talk to strangers and I certainly don't want them to kiss them! A few weeks ago a lady that I have never met or seen before asked if she could hold Sutter...um NO!

    People are so weird!

  5. People are so inappropriate! This happens with my little guy a lot, too and drives me INSANE! I mean, I know he's irresistibly adorable but hands off, please and most definitely no lips!!!

  6. Uggg, some people are so weird! I hate this too! No body wants some strangers germs all over their kid! Even if they are just trying to be nice, its gross!

  7. Oh my goodness we have had the same thing happen all the time with Emily, never with Ethan though! When Emily was in chemo I dreaded taking her to places where I knew people might touch her or try to kiss her but I never really found a way to politely tell people to keep away! By the way, we just found out Emily needs glasses any tips for keeping them on her?

  9. I'm finding that with Arina too! I'm so glad she's not medically fragile like Jax, because we'd be in big trouble! She is very social, and she loves to wave to everyone at the store, so she attracts a lot of kisses and touches!

  11. Your little girl is so adorable! Our son Noah was born on Dec 15, 2010...his extra 21st chromosome came as a surprise to us, but it's been great! We do a daily one minute video to showcase his life (and down syndrome) to the world. Letting them know that life is so much more "normal" (whatever that is) then "un-normal."

I'm glad I came across your site. It's getting bookmarked, and will be keeping up with it! I'm looking forward to learning more about your story!

  12. Blech! That would totally gross me out! I tolerate cheek kisses from some of the older ladies at church, but if some stranger started kissing Claire there would be problems.
